What We're About
Everyday Bourbon for Everyday People
I’m a whiskey enthusiast, writer, and weekend traveler
My name is John. I visit distilleries, hobnob with bourbon people at festivals and events, and occasionally spend time day drinking in great neighborhood bars. I share those experiences here.
You'll find useful resources here, too, including tips, book recommendations, how-to guides, drink recipes, and links to some of my favorite websites and blogs. What you won't find are overly-critical reviews. The way I see it, we're all different-- we like different things for different reasons.
I’m also an everyday person, with budget and time constraints, just like you. If I’m spending a few hundred bucks on a weekend getaway or day-trip, it needs to be worth the expense. If you feel the same, you’ve come to the right place. My purpose here is to sort through the good and not-so-good options to help you make the most of your weekend adventure.
The good news is this: Exploring places that make bourbon, serve bourbon, and celebrate bourbon is not inherently expensive (unless you’re in a distillery gift shop, then yeah, that can add up for sure). And bourbon places are everywhere–in every state, city, and lots of small towns, so getting to them is usually a reasonable proposition.
I'm Not From Around Here
A few years back, I was sitting in a bar with good friends – one of which was a bourbon guy. At that point, I was not a bourbon guy. When it came my time to order, I was about to say, “I want the kind that is sort of caramel-colored and kind of burns a little bit when you drink it.” Lucky for me, I noticed a sign for Bulleit and ordered that instead. Also, they didn’t serve Busch Light.
That was the first time I drank bourbon on purpose.
The more I learn, the more it seems to me that sometimes it’s more complicated than it needs to be. And there are “rules.” “You can’t mix good bourbon with Diet Coke,” for example. Granted, it’s not my preference, but why should I care?
There should be no barriers to experiencing the enjoyment that a finely crafted spirit can bring. Bourbon is for sharing with friends and family; for making lasting memories. And it should be for everyone (of legal drinking age, of course). Everyday Bourbon for Everyday People – that’s what Bourbon Gypsy is all about.
