BRIDGES & BOURBON – Dining (and Bourbon) Done Differently

Sometimes you get lucky. After a long day of meetings in western Pennsylvania, I found myself in Pittsburgh – tired, thirsty, and badly in need of a pick-me-up. I Googled “bourbon bars near me” and chose the first that came up – Bridges & Bourbon. My expectations were middle of the road at best, due to my long day more than anything.

Boy, was I ever surprised. This place is fantastic! Everything about it is upscale and trendy, yet warm and inviting. Large retractable windows open to an expansive outdoor seating area shaded by umbrellas and trees (a little unusual to have tree shade in a downtown setting). It’s a perfect place to enjoy a warm late afternoon or evening of finely-crafted cocktails with friends and family. The people-watching is excellent as well.

Inside, the seating is plush and comfortable, with a modern mix of ceramic, metal, fabric, and leather finishes. And there’s this Great Wall of Bourbon. The bartender easily navigates the sliding ladder to reach his desired prize. It’s fun to watch.

The staff are fantastic too. From the moment you enter, you’re warmly and professionally greeted, like you’ve just walked into a 5-star resort. The servers know the menu well and are happy to make recommendations. My only regret is that I didn’t have enough time on this visit to enjoy the place thoroughly.

But it was happy hour, and I did take full advantage of that. I ordered the Saffron Arancini Stuffed with Burrata Cheese and Bacon Jerky from the Snacks menu – normally $6.00 each, but half-price during happy hour – either way a bargain. It took a bit of the sting out of spending $20.00 on a Widow Jane and a bottle of Yuengling.

I’ll Be Back

As I sat down to write this article on a rainy Sunday morning, I realized that I hadn’t given Bridges & Bourbon it’s proper due, and I hadn’t taken enough photos. My beloved Chiefs were on a bye week, and the weather was crappy. So, like anyone else with a spirit for adventure and a day with nothing much to do, I hopped in the car and drove the four hours from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh. And, like my first visit, I’m glad I did!

This time, Dave (server extraordinaire) suggested I start with their Appalachian Trail cocktail, which is a little like an old fashioned, but less sweet. It’s pictured above, next to the title. Good recommendation!

From there, I ordered a burger. I like burgers almost as much as bourbon, especially when made with high-quality ingredients by an expert chef. It was all that I’d hoped for. Dessert featured Espresso Chili Pot De Crème, rich and chocolatey, with a spicy kick!

According to their website, Bridges & Bourbon provides an interactive and social experience.  They focus on modern cocktails that are visually stunning and food that engages your senses. Dining done differently, they say. I completely agree!

“I love this place! I think we’re doing something extraordinary, really special.”

Manager, Erica

I don’t get to Pittsburgh often, but when I do, I’ll make this a must-stop in my travel itinerary. You should too!
